FAQs for sketchbook creators - english
Are you creative and express yourself through fine art? Are you interested in exploring your own answers to questions about our world, justice, and peace? Perfect! Create your own sketchbook and become part of our unique exhibition! Find answers to the most important questions here!
What is the project about?
Three hundred people who express themselves through art create a completely unique sketchbook, exploring traces of justice and peace in their lives. They envision what becomes possible when imagination is given meaning.
In 2026, the exhibition - where these sketchbooks can be viewed and experienced - will tour through (Eastern) Germany. It invites visitors to engage with the project’s theme and always touches on the question of how we can actively shape our world. Inviting conversation formats, inspiring creative activities, and (online) meetings with the artists accompany the exhibition days.
At its core, the project revolves around these two questions:
Where do you encounter justice and peace in your daily life—or where do you not?
And what does it look like—our world, one that is just and at peace?
Why is this project important to you?
We are interested in the answers to our questions! Honestly! And we are convinced: not just we are interested in them but many other people, too! We're longing for an honest debate about where peace and justice are or are not found in our different realities of life. We're looking for what connects us as humans and also for the injustice that we all want to overcome. We're convinced that our imagination ist a central key for discussions on how we want to shape this world.
Art can open us up to human experiences that we sometimes not pay attention to in our everyday lives. Expression through art ist as diverse as the people who create it. The sketchbooks give us a glimpse into other realities and immerse us in different perspectives - someting that is vital when triving for justice and peace.
We want the sketchbooks to represent the diversity of people who really want to engage with the project's questions - in Germany and other parts of the world.
We are concerned with the voices we consider being too loud in the current debates. Who would we like to get answers from to our questions?
We invite people who express themselves through their art to be a part of this sketchbook project: those who stand for something, those who consider themself being part of a (marginalized) group, those who have ideas for answers to the project's questions, those who have the courage to follow their imagination, those who want to widen their view or open up their heart to let other's gaze at their inside, those who want to play their part in bringing peace and justice to our world.

I want to create my own sketchbook: who can join the project? What do I need to do now?
Perfect! We're so happy! Send an e-mail and explain briefly why your voice shouldn't be missed in the sketchbook project. There are no formal restrictions in joining the project. It's a project with global perspective, showing the diviersity in people's living realities. You will get an immediate answer about the next steps. When you hold your blanc sketchbook in your hands, you will have to register on our website, first and then your 4 months of creative work will begin!
What are the rules?
You are free to give your own answers to the questions to express in a way that reflects your personality, your way of life and your art. There are only two limitations:
1. The sketchbook has to stay so small that it will fit in the protecting envelope you'll be provided with by us.
2. When opening the sketchbook nothing is supposed to fall out, so fix everything, tightly.
In this project we want to celebrate all the different ways in which people experience peace and justice in their lives. We want to respectfully share the ways in which people do not experience justice and peace in their lives or in the world around them. We want to create safe spaces for those who open themselves up for insight in their environment. We want to create an atmosphere where it's possible to think about what seems impossible and use our imagination in the most creative ways!
With that being sad, there's no room for degradation of people or groups of people in any way in this project.
We reserve the right not to exhibit your sketchbook if it does not conform with these rules!
What information do I have to share about myself?
That's your decision! On the last page in the sketchbook you find a space to share information about yourself and also your social media. You can also create a sketchbook anonymously. We only need a postal address where we can send the sketchbook to and an e-mail address to register your sketchbook.
Which art techniques can I use?
The sketchbooks are manufactured specifically, by hand, for this project. They are in portrait format (size 13,5 x 21cm), include 14 sheets (28 pages) of high-quality art paper (mixed media paper) and can be used for different media (wet & dry): drawing, painting, sketching, photographing (photographs have to be tightly fixed in the sketchbook so that they don't fall out), collages and many more.
What costs will I incur?
Participation in the project is free of charge. The materials you need for your creative process (pens, paints, brushes, etc.) are provided by you. We will send you a blank, hand-crafted, high-quality sketchbook along with everything you need for returning it. We kindly ask you to pay for the return postage yourself. If this is not possible for you, we are happy to reimburse the postage cost.
What happens to my completed sketchbook?
Once your artwork is finished, you send it back to us. We will provide all the shipping materials. If you need financial support for the return shipping, simply let us know, and we will reimburse the shipping costs.
The hundreds of sketchbooks will form an exhibition that will tour primarily in locations in Eastern Germany, but also beyond. All the sketchbooks will be available for visitors to view, so they will actually be touched, handled and opened/closed several times as appreciated works of art. They will serve as a starting point for visitors to engage with the questions posed by the project.
In addition, there will be an online exhibition. This will allow even more people to see the artworks, and artists from all over the world can stay actively connected to the project during the exhibition period.
How will your artwork be used?
Primarily, your sketchbook will be displayed alongside several hundred other sketchbooks in a beautifully curated exhibition in 2026. Visitors will be able to take it from the shelf and look through it, meaning your work will be directly engaged with multiple times. Your sketchbook will never be left unattended—trained staff (including some volunteers) will carefully oversee and protect the artworks.
Your sketchbook remains yours, and you retain all rights to your work. We will use excerpts from it for promotional purposes (across all public communication channels, including online platforms) and will always credit you when featuring a section of your sketchbook. Whenever possible (e.g., online and on social media), we will also link to you using the information you provide on the last page of your sketchbook—this is where you can include your social media if you wish. If you prefer to remain anonymous, any excerpts we share will be labeled accordingly.
Additionally, there will be an online exhibition where selected sections of all sketchbooks will be showcased. Your work will always be credited with the name you provided on the last page of your sketchbook. If you've shared your social media details, we will include them here as well. If you choose to remain anonymous, your work will be displayed without attribution.
